U.S. Southern Command announced on Aug. 8 that the PANAMAX 2026 exercise reached its midpoint with 19 nations participating in collective defense drills focused on protecting the Panama Canal. It is the largest multinational defense exercise in the Western Hemisphere.
The exercise simulates scenarios including threats to the Canal’s physical infrastructure and maritime security in surrounding waterways. Military forces from across Latin America and the Caribbean are participating alongside U.S. units.
The Panama Canal handles approximately 5% of global maritime trade and is a critical artery for both U.S. military logistics and American commercial shipping. Disruption of Canal operations would have immediate consequences for supply chains, consumer prices and military readiness.
The exercise occurs against the backdrop of the administration’s heightened attention to Chinese influence over Canal operations. Hutchison Ports, a Hong Kong-based company, operates ports at both ends of the Canal, a situation U.S. officials have flagged as a strategic concern.
PANAMAX has been conducted annually since 2003 and serves as both a training event and a demonstration of U.S. commitment to Western Hemisphere security. The 19-nation participation level reflects broad regional consensus on the Canal’s strategic importance.
The exercise tests command and control arrangements among partner nations, interoperability between different military forces and the ability to coordinate a multinational response to a complex maritime scenario. For the participating Latin American and Caribbean nations, PANAMAX is often the most significant military exercise of the year.
SOUTHCOM described the drill as demonstrating allied resolve to protect critical infrastructure in the region.
