Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods of Richmond, Virginia, on July 31 recalled approximately 22,880 pounds of baked spaghetti and chicken cobbler products due to possible metal sliver contamination, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.
The products were sold in North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia and carry best-by dates through Aug. 5, meaning potentially contaminated items may still be in consumers’ refrigerators.
Metal foreign object contamination in ready-to-eat products poses risks including choking, dental damage, lacerations and internal injuries. FSIS oversees the safety of meat and poultry products and has the authority to require recalls when contamination is identified.
Consumers who have the recalled products should not eat them and should return them to the place of purchase or discard them. The affected items include specific lot codes identified in the FSIS recall notice.
The recall was classified after FSIS was notified of the contamination. The agency monitors consumer complaints and conducts effectiveness checks to verify that recalled product is removed from retail shelves.
Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods produces refrigerated prepared meals sold primarily through grocery retailers in the mid-Atlantic region.
