U.S. Northern Command on Aug. 4 activated Army soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state to deploy in support of wildfire suppression efforts, marking a domestic military support to civil authority operation driven by the severity of the fires.

The activation coincides with President Trump’s emergency declaration for Washington state, which provides the legal and logistical framework for the federal response. NORTHCOM coordinates all federal military assets deployed for domestic emergency response.

Soldiers activated under DSCA — Defense Support of Civil Authorities — operate under civilian command authority and augment, rather than replace, state and local firefighting resources. Military personnel typically provide ground-clearing, logistics, aviation support and manpower for fire line construction.

JBLM, located near Tacoma, is one of the largest military installations on the West Coast and has served as a staging base for wildfire response in prior fire seasons.

The military activation underscores the scale of the Washington wildfire emergency, which began Aug. 1 and has grown beyond the capacity of state and federal civilian firefighting agencies to contain.

NORTHCOM activations for wildfire support have become more frequent in recent years as fire seasons have grown longer and more intense across the Western United States. The National Interagency Fire Center coordinates resource allocation among federal, state and military firefighting assets.
