The Census Bureau released 2024 Annual Integrated Economic Survey data on Sept. 3, providing the most comprehensive annual snapshot of the U.S. private sector economy with national and state-level detail on business revenue, expenses, payroll and employment.
The AIES data covers calendar year 2024, establishing a full-year economic baseline against which the effects of current administration policies can be measured. The survey integrates information previously collected through multiple separate Census surveys into a single comprehensive release.
The data provides national aggregate figures as well as state-level breakdowns, allowing researchers, policymakers and business leaders to compare economic conditions across regions and industry sectors. The level of detail makes the AIES a foundational data source for federal economic analysis.
For American businesses and workers, the survey captures the overall health of the private sector including total revenue generated, the cost structure businesses face, and the wages and employment levels that determine household income across the economy.
The release precedes the Census Bureau’s upcoming announcement of 2025 national income and poverty statistics, which will provide a more direct measure of how economic conditions are translating into household financial well-being.
The Congressional Budget Office, Council of Economic Advisers and Federal Reserve all use Census economic data as inputs for fiscal and monetary policy analysis. Business organizations including the National Association of Manufacturers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce use the data to inform industry advocacy and workforce planning.
The AIES data is publicly available through the Census Bureau’s data portal and will be the subject of analysis from government economists, academic researchers and private-sector analysts in the coming weeks.
