A resident of Clairton, Pennsylvania, Tracey Smith, was sentenced on July 21 to 76 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $1,172,209.80 in restitution to two former employers for bank fraud convictions as well as violations of federal supervised release and a bond order, United States Attorney Troy Rivetti announced.
Chief United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon imposed the sentence on Smith, age 58. According to information presented in court, while on federal supervised release for a prior wire fraud conviction from February 2023, Smith was hired as a comptroller by a Pittsburgh engineering firm where she embezzled company funds for personal use.
While awaiting sentencing on those charges, Smith secured employment at another company as comptroller and again embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars by creating unauthorized checks and misusing a company credit card.
Prior to issuing the sentence, Judge Bissoon observed that Smith had a serious criminal history related to embezzlement.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci prosecuted the case. United States Attorney Rivetti commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation for its role in investigating and prosecuting Smith.
