Sherman Thomas, a 43-year-old Cleveland resident, was sentenced on July 29 to 275 months in prison for his involvement in a conspiracy that trafficked methamphetamine from Mexico into Ohio through the U.S. Postal Service.
U.S. District Judge J. Philip Calabrese imposed the sentence after a federal jury convicted Thomas in June 2025 of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute controlled substances, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, using or maintaining a drug premises, and possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon. Thomas’s prior convictions include aggravated robbery in 2001 and several weapons offenses in 2009. He was also ordered to serve a lifetime of supervised release following his imprisonment.
According to court documents, the conspiracy operated from July 2022 through April 2023. Prosecutors said Thomas worked with several co-conspirators who sourced drugs from Mexico for distribution as illicit pills. Co-defendant Melvin Hodge contacted individuals in Mexico and traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border to obtain methamphetamine, which he mailed into Ohio using the United States mail system. Upon arrival in northern Ohio, Hodge met with another co-conspirator who worked as a postal carrier; this individual provided addresses that allowed parcels containing methamphetamine safe passage through his postal route and informed Hodge where packages could be retrieved. After receiving these packages from the postal carrier, Hodge supplied the drugs to Thomas.
As part of his role, Thomas maintained a drug premises on Reyburn Road in Cleveland Heights equipped with an industrial pill press used for producing illegal pills. He stored narcotics at his residence on Father Caruso Drive in Cleveland. In September 2022, federal agents executed a search warrant at this residence; witnesses testified that Thomas escaped out of an open window when agents arrived. Agents seized over four kilograms of methamphetamine—some pressed into multicolored pills—alongside firearms including a Glock pistol and rifle, ammunition, narcotics ledgers, cellphones, pill presses, money counter equipment, and binding agents during searches at both locations.
Two other conspirators have already been sentenced: Hodge is serving ten years while Carvin Cook received forty-one months imprisonment for their roles.
The investigation involved multiple agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration-Detroit Division; United States Postal Inspection Service; Cleveland Metroparks Police Department; Cleveland Heights Police Department; Summit County Sheriff’s Office; and support from United States Marshals Service.
