Oscar Andres Lopez-Gomez, a 52-year-old citizen of Colombia, was sentenced on June 18 to 25 months in prison after pleading guilty to felony use of a false Social Security Number and aggravated identity theft. The sentencing took place in South Bend before United States District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty, according to an announcement by United States Attorney Adam L. Mildred.
Lopez-Gomez admitted to using another person’s name, date of birth, and Social Security Number in an attempt to circumvent employment rules. U.S. Attorney Adam L. Mildred said, “The Defendant, a citizen of Colombia, committed Aggravated Identity Theft by using another person’s name, date of birth, and Social Security Number in an attempt to circumvent rules regarding employment. Circumventing those rules is not ‘victimless’ conduct in that it affects the economic opportunities available to citizens and guests of our country who lawfully participate in the economy in good faith.”
The case was prosecuted following collaboration between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Homeland Security Investigations.
Assistant United States Attorney Lydia T. Lucius handled the prosecution.
