Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, a Cuban artist and leader of the San Isidro Movement, arrived in the United States on July 18 after years of imprisonment by the Cuban regime. According to a statement, Otero Alcántara was detained for using his art to demand basic freedoms for Cubans.

The San Isidro Movement, which Otero Alcántara helped establish, is described as a source of hope for Cubans opposed to government repression. The statement said that authorities imprisoned him because they feared citizens who speak openly about life under communism and repression. It added that he faced harassment, detention, and repeated imprisonment before going into exile.

The Trump Administration said it remains committed to supporting the Cuban people’s pursuit of freedom from tyranny and promoting democracy and fundamental rights. The statement called for the immediate release of more than 700 political prisoners currently held by the Cuban regime.

It also urged the international community not to ignore human rights abuses in Cuba and encouraged other nations to join calls for an end to repression.

Otero Alcántara’s arrival comes amid ongoing concerns over civil liberties in Cuba.
