Dylan Hiner, 20, of Dayton, was sentenced on July 14 to 27 months in federal prison for illegally receiving a firearm or ammunition while under indictment for another felony crime. The sentencing took place in federal court in Dayton.
According to court documents, Hiner attended a Halloween party at the University of Dayton on Nov. 1, 2025. During the event, he participated in a shootout and fired multiple rounds into the air. Another suspect also fired a weapon and shot a student in the leg.
The Dayton Police Department and University of Dayton Police Department responded to the scene, where they recovered multiple rounds of ammunition and reviewed home surveillance footage. Video evidence showed Hiner discharging a firearm between houses on Evanston Avenue.
At the time of this incident, Hiner was under indictment in Montgomery County for allegedly carrying a concealed weapon and improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle. Federal law prohibits individuals under such indictments from receiving firearms or ammunition.
Court records indicate that Hiner had been suspected of multiple shootings and other violent acts during 2025. The United States detailed that surveillance footage and Instagram posts showed him possessing and firing weapons.
Hiner was arrested and charged federally on Nov. 10, 2025, later pleading guilty to the charges in February. Dominick S. Newman.
