U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released a statement on July 16 following President Trump’s speech regarding the 2020 election and concerns about future elections.

Durbin said, “President Trump and his Republican Party are flailing. They know their MAGA agenda is making life more expensive, communities less safe, and government more corrupt.”

He continued, “Tonight’s ‘speech’ from the President is a dangerous attempt to resurrect disproven lies to undermine future elections before a single vote is cast. Our democracy is not guaranteed. It is paramount that Republicans and Democrats join together in support of free and fair elections and condemn any attempts by this President to undermine our democracy before it’s too late.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee, where Durbin serves as Ranking Member, affects constitutional protections and public safety nationwide via its legislative and oversight duties; it aims to uphold the Constitution by reviewing legislation, overseeing federal law enforcement, evaluating judicial nominations, influencing civil rights through its responsibilities, exerting influence on federal law across the nation from Washington D.C., serving as a standing committee with authority over judicial matters, and includes senators from both major political parties led by a chair who oversees meetings and hearings, according to the official website of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

No further statements were included in Durbin’s release.
