A federal jury found Michaela Karon McKinney guilty on three counts related to a fentanyl trafficking conspiracy operating between the Twin Cities metropolitan area and Greater Minnesota, according to a July 15 announcement by United States Attorney Daniel N. Rosen.
The verdict followed a two-day trial before U.S. District Judge John R. Tunheim that began on July 13. McKinney was convicted of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, aiding and abetting possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense.
Court documents show that investigators identified La’Veal O. Allen as the leader of the Minneapolis-based distribution network during an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking from the Twin Cities to Bemidji in 2023. In late spring of that year, police infiltrated Allen’s operation and an undercover officer arranged purchases from him. In June and July 2024, McKinney assisted Allen on several narcotics trips, helping facilitate sales including more than 180 grams of powder fentanyl, nearly 500 M-30 pills containing fentanyl, and about 30 grams of methamphetamine. On one occasion she provided her vehicle for transporting drugs; later she drove Allen herself from the Twin Cities to Little Falls for another sale.
During an undercover transaction at a Walmart parking lot in Little Falls on July 1, 2024, Allen sold large quantities of powder fentanyl and pills as well as methamphetamine while being driven by McKinney. Both were arrested immediately after the exchange. Officers searching McKinney’s vehicle found her six-year-old son in the back seat and a loaded Glock pistol registered to her in the center console; forensic testing identified both her DNA and Allen’s DNA on the firearm.
McKinney faces a minimum penalty of ten years imprisonment. Her co-defendants La’Veal O. Allen and Marquise J. Walker pleaded guilty earlier—on December 16, 2025, and April 3, 2026—and all await sentencing.
“This case shows the continuing fentanyl and drug trafficking operations into Greater Minnesota. My office is committed to working with law enforcement partners across the state to dismantle the networks pushing these lethal substances up north, and to protect families and communities,” said United States Attorney Daniel N. Rosen.
Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force Commander David Hart said, “This federal conviction demonstrates what can be accomplished through proactive investigations and strong partnerships between local, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement… Every successful prosecution represents another step toward protecting our communities… I am extremely proud of… our task force agents… who made this outcome possible.” The case involved multiple agencies including local police departments as well as federal authorities such as FBI Headwaters Task Force.
