The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network urged financial institutions on July 24 to detect, prevent, and report suspicious activity related to fraud schemes that target federal student aid programs. The agency, part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, issued an alert as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard funds administered by the Federal government.
According to the announcement, FinCEN called for increased vigilance among financial institutions handling transactions connected with student aid. The alert is intended to help these institutions identify patterns and activities that may indicate fraudulent behavior.
The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network contributes to societal safety by publishing strategic reports and analyses that inform both the public and industry about financial crime threats, according to the official website. The organization processes millions of reports such as Currency Transaction Reports and Suspicious Activity Reports for analysis each year. It also seeks to strengthen U.S. national security by gathering, examining, and sharing financial intelligence aimed at addressing money laundering and terrorist financing.
Operating within the Treasury Department, FinCEN coordinates with domestic and international partners in its efforts against illicit finance networks worldwide. It provides financial intelligence that supports law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies in their work against money laundering and terrorist financing activities.
FinCEN said it will continue working with stakeholders across sectors in order to protect federal student aid programs from exploitation.
