First Assistant U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III of the Northern District of New York attended the U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area Change of Command Ceremony in the Great Hall of Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts, on Aug. 6. The event marked a leadership transition as Rear Admiral Michael Platt was relieved by Rear Admiral Matthew Lake.

Faneuil Hall, known as the “Cradle of Liberty,” has long served as a venue for civic engagement and national events, providing a symbolic setting for this ceremony recognizing new leadership within the Coast Guard.

Sarcone’s attendance highlighted ongoing cooperation between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and federal partners across the region. He acknowledged the importance of the Coast Guard’s work in protecting communities throughout the Atlantic area and its support for initiatives in northern New York.

“The Coast Guard’s partnership strengthens our collective efforts to protect the public and uphold federal law,” Sarcone said. “This ceremony honored exceptional leadership and reaffirmed the critical collaboration that allows us to serve our communities effectively.”

The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York is part of the United States Department of Justice, covers 32 counties over more than 30,000 square miles with about 3.4 million residents, maintains offices in Albany, Binghamton, Plattsburgh and Syracuse, employs about 50 Assistant United States Attorneys with more than 50 support staff, prosecutes federal criminal cases and defends civil matters on behalf of the United States, supports community wellness through law enforcement initiatives and outreach programs to deter crime and foster public trust, according to its official website.

The office expressed appreciation for Rear Admiral Platt’s service while looking forward to continued collaboration with Rear Admiral Lake.
