Herbert Battle, Jr., 54, of Hardee County, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Virgina M. Hernandez Covington to 27 years in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine, according to a July 16 announcement by United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe.
Court documents and evidence presented at sentencing show that Battle oversaw a drug trafficking conspiracy in which he and others smuggled methamphetamine from California to the Tampa area, concealing the drugs in mailed packages. At its peak, the operation received up to 20 pounds of high-purity methamphetamine per week. Battle pleaded guilty on August 19, 2025.
Battle’s criminal history dates back to 1989 and includes a prior federal drug conviction in 2018 for conspiracy to distribute heroin.
The case is part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative established by Executive Order 14159, Protecting the American People Against Invasion. The Homeland Security Task Force is described as a whole-of-government partnership dedicated to eliminating criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating both within the United States and abroad. The task force directs interagency collaboration toward identifying, investigating, and prosecuting crimes committed by these organizations.
