Homeland Security Investigations and law enforcement partners concluded a two-week statewide operation targeting child exploitation offenders across Mississippi on Aug. 10, resulting in 70 arrests, ICE announced.
Operation Muddy Waters is one of the largest coordinated child exploitation enforcement operations in the state’s history, targeting individuals accused of producing, distributing, or possessing child sexual abuse material, as well as those who violated sex offender registration requirements.
The operation involved multiple federal, state, and local agencies operating across all regions of Mississippi, ICE said.
HSI has been conducting similar multiagency child exploitation operations in multiple states this year, employing a strategy of concentrated state-level enforcement surges designed to identify and arrest offenders who might otherwise evade detection.
Those arrested face charges that range from production and distribution of child sexual abuse material to failure to register as sex offenders. Individual cases will be prosecuted at the federal or state level depending on the specific charges.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has reported a steady increase in reports of online child sexual exploitation in recent years, driven in part by the growth of social media and encrypted communication platforms.
HSI is the Department of Homeland Security’s principal investigative arm for child exploitation cases involving international elements or internet-based offenses.
Child exploitation enforcement operations of this scale receive broad bipartisan support in Congress and are a stated priority for the Department of Homeland Security.
