The United States welcomed the intent of the Government of the Republic of Iraq and the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic to advance the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Iraq-Syria crude oil pipeline as a priority infrastructure project, according to a July 17 announcement.
Both countries said they recognize the strategic objective of restoring a critical energy corridor linking Iraqi oil production to Mediterranean export markets and beyond. The United States also welcomed the engagement of a U.S.-led international consortium that will execute both technical and financial aspects of this project.
According to officials, upon completion, this project is expected to have an initial transport capacity of 2 million barrels per day of crude oil. The announcement was described as an important milestone for regional relations between Syria and Iraq.
The two governments committed to work jointly on rehabilitating and operating the pipeline, creating a legal framework for its operation, and engaging constructively with the consortium. They said these efforts would advance security and stability through prosperity in the region.
The statement attributed progress on this initiative to what it called “the vision and leadership” of President Donald J. Trump.
