A federal judge sentenced German Campos Jr. to 14 years in prison for violently robbing six banks in the Chicago suburbs, according to an Aug. 3 announcement.
Campos, 26, of Franklin Park, Illinois, committed six bank robberies between October 2023 and August 2024. In five of these incidents, Campos brandished a gun at bank tellers and customers. The robberies occurred at U.S. Bank branches in Schaumburg on Oct. 18, 2023, and March 6, 2024; Elmhurst on Dec. 16, 2023, and June 13, 2024; BMO Bank in Park Ridge on Aug. 9, 2024; and U.S. Bank in Niles on Aug. 28, 2024.
Campos was arrested on Sept. 17, 2024, and has remained in law enforcement custody since that time. He pleaded guilty in March of this year to federal bank robbery and firearm charges.
U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin handed down the sentence on Wednesday.
The sentencing was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Ryan Whalen, Acting Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI; with substantial assistance from police departments in Schaumburg, Elmhurst, Park Ridge, Niles and Franklin Park.
“Defendant’s repeated use of a gun during robberies, including pointing that gun into victim faces over and over again, posed a significant threat to the safety of the bank employees, customers, and general public,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie C. Stern argued in the government’s sentencing memorandum. “The only reason why defendant stopped his violent robbery spree was because he was finally caught after ten months of terrorizing bank employees and customers.”
