First Lady Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future Together initiative secured new private-sector technology partnerships aimed at improving outcomes for children in foster care and at-risk youth, the State Department announced on Sept. 22.

The initiative focuses on leveraging technology-sector resources to address challenges facing vulnerable children, with new corporate partners joining the program to expand its reach, according to the announcement.

The State Department’s publication of the initiative reflects the First Lady’s use of American diplomatic infrastructure to advance domestic-focused child welfare goals. Fact sheets detailing specific partnership commitments and expected program outcomes were released alongside the announcement.

More than 390,000 children were in foster care in the United States as of the most recent federal data. Youth who age out of the foster care system without permanent family placements face significantly higher rates of homelessness, unemployment and involvement in the criminal justice system.

Technology-sector partnerships can provide foster care organizations with data management tools, educational resources and communication platforms designed to improve case management and youth outcomes.

The Fostering the Future Together initiative joins a series of child welfare efforts that have been priorities for Melania Trump. The program’s public-private partnership model is designed to complement government-funded child welfare services with private-sector innovation and resources.

The fact sheet released by the State Department identifies the new technology partners and outlines their specific commitments to the initiative. The partnerships are structured to deliver measurable outcomes for participating youth and organizations.

The initiative gives the First Lady’s child welfare platform both diplomatic visibility and private-sector resources, according to the announcement.
