U.S. Northern Command’s Joint Task Force Southern Border used a high-energy laser system to neutralize drones linked to cartel activity near the U.S.-Mexico border on Aug. 27, marking the first confirmed operational use of a directed-energy weapon in a domestic border security context.
The deployment represents a significant milestone in counter-drone technology and a shift toward directed-energy capabilities in the homeland defense mission, according to the command’s announcement. The laser system’s manufacturer and technical specifications were not disclosed.
Drug cartels have increasingly used small drones for surveillance of U.S. law enforcement operations and to transport narcotics across the border. The use of a military-grade directed-energy weapon against those drones marks an escalation in the technological response to the threat.
For communities along the southern border, the deployment adds a new military capability to the counter-narcotics and border security infrastructure already in place. High-energy laser systems offer advantages over conventional kinetic weapons for drone defense, including lower cost per shot and reduced risk of collateral damage.
The operational use of military weapons systems in a domestic border context raises legal and oversight questions. The Posse Comitatus Act generally restricts the use of military forces for civilian law enforcement, though exceptions exist for counter-drug operations and when authorized by Congress.
NORTHCOM’s Joint Task Force Southern Border coordinates military support to the Department of Homeland Security’s border security mission. The task force was established to provide logistics, surveillance and other support to Customs and Border Protection and other DHS agencies.
