WASHINGTON — The Office of Naval Research concluded its Innovation Industry Days and Focus Area Technical Exchanges, known as TECHx, at George Mason University’s Mason Square campus on Sept. 30, connecting defense industry innovators with the Navy’s science and technology research priorities.
The events are a key mechanism for accelerating the transition of emerging technologies from commercial research and development into naval applications, ONR said.
ONR is the principal funder of basic and applied research for the Navy and Marine Corps, managing a portfolio that spans undersea warfare, autonomous systems, directed energy, advanced materials and cybersecurity, among other areas.
Innovation Industry Days and TECHx bring together small businesses, large defense contractors, academic researchers and Navy program managers to identify technology solutions for specific operational needs, according to ONR. The format is designed to compress the timeline between technology identification and Navy adoption.
For American taxpayers funding a naval fleet that faces growing maintenance, modernization and capability demands, the speed at which new technologies move from the lab to the fleet is a critical determinant of military readiness and cost efficiency.
The events directly shape which emerging technologies — and which companies — win future Navy contracts and research funding. Participation provides industry partners with insight into the Navy’s priority technology gaps and investment plans.
George Mason University’s proximity to the Pentagon and the broader Northern Virginia defense technology ecosystem makes it a frequent venue for defense-industry engagement events.
ONR said the specific technology focus areas for this cycle’s events were published in the office’s official release.
