U.S. Attorney Benjamin L. Wallace announced on June 16 that Paul W. Kaufman has been appointed First Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Delaware. In this role, Kaufman will serve as the office’s second-ranking official and assist in leading operations and fulfilling the office’s mission throughout the district.
“Paul Kaufman has been an exemplary advocate for the United States for nearly two decades,” said U.S. Attorney Wallace. “I am delighted that he has agreed to help me lead the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware. The Office and the District will benefit immensely from Paul’s sharp mind, steady hands, and sound judgment.”
Kaufman has served as an Assistant United States Attorney since 2007 in both the District of New Jersey and Eastern District of Pennsylvania, specializing in civil fraud enforcement and leading teams that have recovered hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. He also developed processes to streamline parallel prosecution of criminal and civil matters while working on defensive and criminal cases.
His experience includes roles as Electronic Discovery Office Coordinator, participation in national electronic discovery working groups, and frequent training engagements at institutions such as the National Advocacy Center, where he teaches trial advocacy, pre-trial advocacy, motion practice, and eLitigation to other AUSAs.
Kaufman is an adjunct professor at several law schools, including University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, Temple University Beasley School of Law, and Rutgers-Camden Law School. He is a graduate of Yale Law School, University of Chicago, and Saint Mark’s High School in Newark, Delaware.
A long-time supporter of high school mock trial programs, Kaufman serves on the Board of Directors for the National High School Mock Trial Championship—serving as Chair from 2020-2025—and received awards such as the Justice Gene Franchini Golden Gavel Award in 2024 and induction into Saint Mark’s High School Hall of Honor in 2025.
