The President issued a message on July 5 recognizing the 161st anniversary of the United States Secret Service, highlighting the agency’s continued commitment to protecting national leaders and safeguarding American institutions.
In the statement, the President said, “On the 161st anniversary of the United States Secret Service, we celebrate the extraordinary professionals who, with absolute selflessness and little fanfare, work to protect our Nation’s leaders and safeguard our most sacred institutions. With their quiet professionalism, unwavering vigilance, and steadfast devotion to duty, they have truly proven themselves ‘Worthy of Trust and Confidence.'”
The message recounts that on July 5, 1865, following legislation signed by President Abraham Lincoln shortly before his assassination, the Secret Service was established with an initial mission focused on investigating and suppressing currency forgery. The President said agents worked “to ensure economic stability in the post-Civil War era,” adding that this remains part of their mission today.
Following President William McKinley’s assassination in 1901, Congress expanded the agency’s responsibilities to include protection for Presidents—a duty now covering Vice Presidents, First and Second Families, foreign dignitaries, and special protectees. According to the statement, “Today, more than 8,000 highly skilled and exceptionally trained special agents; uniformed police officers; technical law enforcement personnel; intelligence and threat analysts, and administrative professionals safeguard both our Nation’s financial infrastructure and the security of those entrusted with the highest offices.” The message also notes that these individuals are prepared “at a moment’s notice to place themselves in harm’s way,” commending their service amid what it describes as increased radical violence.
This year marks not only an agency milestone but also coincides with nationwide celebrations for America’s 250th year of independence. The President acknowledged efforts by Secret Service members during events such as state fairs and rallies: “Our agents are working tirelessly to ensure the success and safety of…the grandest…birthday celebration in history.”
Concluding his remarks about service members’ dedication to freedom and lawfulness, he stated: “So long as such patriots stand watch…our Republic will endure stronger…and freer than ever before.”
