The White House released a presidential message on July 20 commemorating Space Exploration Day and reflecting on the legacy of the Apollo Moon landing. The statement highlights ongoing American efforts in space, including recent missions and future plans.
According to the message, “On Space Exploration Day, we commemorate one of the greatest achievements in the history of our Republic: landing Americans upon the surface of the Moon. Inspired by that giant leap, we look ahead with bold resolve, certain that America will continue to lead humanity into a new Golden Age of space exploration.”
The president recalled that on July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins traveled to the Moon as part of Apollo 11. “In that extraordinary moment, and time and again in the missions that followed, American astronauts achieved what the world had once thought impossible,” he said.
The message also recognized recent progress in space exploration: “This spring, American astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, joined by Canadian partner Jeremy Hansen, soared into deep space aboard Artemis II for the first time in over 50 years.” The president said their success has propelled further Artemis missions aimed at returning Americans to the Moon and laying groundwork for future Mars expeditions.
Highlighting national security aspects as well as scientific achievement, he said, “The same brilliance that carries our astronauts to the Moon also powers our incredible United States Space Force… During my first term I was proud to reestablish the National Space Council… securing American dominance in space for all time to come.”
Concluding his remarks on America’s spirit of discovery after celebrating its 250th year of independence this month, he stated, “Together we will write the next great chapter in history of manned spaceflight—and United States of America will once again lead among stars.”
