The U.S. Senate Committee on Aging will hold a hearing titled, “The AI Deception Machine: Deepfakes, Chatbots, and the New Frontier of Senior Fraud,” on July 29 in Washington, D.C. The session will be led by Chairman Rick Scott and Ranking Member Kirsten Gillibrand and aims to address how artificial intelligence is fueling an increase in fraudulent schemes targeting older Americans.
According to the committee announcement, the hearing will feature testimony from individuals affected by AI-enabled scams as well as insights from banking industry experts and policy professionals. Witnesses scheduled include David Amron, M.D., Founder & Medical Director of The Roxbury Institute; Deborah Del Mastro, a victim of an AI-enabled scam; Paul Benda, Executive Vice President of Risk, Fraud and Cybersecurity at the American Bankers Association; Matthew F. Ferraro, Esq., Partner at Crowell & Moring LLP; and Ben Winters, J.D., Director of AI and Data Privacy at Consumer Federation of America.
The committee said the event will take place at 3:45 p.m. Eastern Time in Dirksen Room 562 with a live broadcast available online.
Rick Scott serves as chair and Kirsten Gillibrand as ranking member of the Senate Aging Committee. The committee provides resources to protect older Americans from fraud and financial exploitation through tools such as a dedicated fraud hotline. It also maintains offices in both the Dirksen Senate Office Building for the majority party and Hart Senate Office Building for the minority party,according to the official website.
The Senate Aging Committee’s oversight extends nationwide across all aging-related federal programs including Medicare, Social Security, long-term care initiatives, retirement security issues, and elder abuse prevention efforts through regular hearings and policy recommendations.
