The U.S. Space Force selected the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory as its technical direction agent for the Space-Based Interceptor program on July 31. The program is a core component of President Donald Trump’s Golden Dome missile defense initiative.
The contract advances development of interceptors designed to destroy enemy missiles from orbit, a fundamental architectural shift in how the United States defends the homeland against ballistic missile attack. The Golden Dome program has been the administration’s signature missile defense effort since its announcement.
Johns Hopkins APL, based in Laurel, Maryland, has decades of experience in missile defense research and has supported several previous Defense Department space and missile programs. The laboratory will guide the technical development of the interceptor system under Space Force oversight.
The selection places a named contractor at the center of the program for the first time, moving Golden Dome from a policy directive to a funded development effort with an identified technical lead.
Space-based interceptors represent the most consequential change to U.S. homeland missile defense architecture since the establishment of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system in Alaska and California. The current ground-based system has faced persistent questions about its ability to counter increasingly sophisticated threats from North Korea, China, and Russia.
By placing interceptors in orbit, the system would theoretically be able to engage enemy missiles during their boost phase shortly after launch, when they are slowest and most vulnerable. Previous efforts to develop space-based missile defenses, dating to the Strategic Defense Initiative of the 1980s, did not reach deployment.
The program’s cost has not been publicly disclosed. The Space Force said additional contract awards for the program are expected in the coming months.
