The Space Force selected Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as the Technical Direction Agent for the Space-Based Interceptor Program, a core component of the administration’s Golden Dome missile defense architecture, on July 31.
The selection marks the first major institutional support contract for Golden Dome’s space component, moving the program from concept to structured development, according to the Space Force.
APL will provide independent technical direction, systems engineering, and oversight for the space-based interceptor development effort, the announcement said. The laboratory has a long history of supporting national security space and missile defense programs for the Department of Defense.
Golden Dome is the administration’s signature layered missile defense initiative, envisioning both ground-based and space-based interceptor systems designed to defeat ballistic missile threats from adversary nations. The program has been identified as a top defense priority by the White House.
The space-based interceptor concept envisions placing missile defense assets in orbit, where they could engage incoming ballistic missiles during their boost or midcourse phases of flight. The approach has been studied for decades but has never progressed to operational deployment.
The award represents a critical program milestone that will shape the technical approach for years of subsequent development, with significant implications for defense spending. Cost estimates for the full Golden Dome architecture have not been publicly released.
The program also carries implications for arms control, as space-based interceptors would represent a departure from historical norms around the militarization of space.
