Release: On behalf of the United States of America, I offer my congratulations to the people of Fiji as you celebrate your independence on October 10.

Release: Since the military coup in Burma over 18 months ago, the Burmese military regime has perpetrated violence against Burma’s people, killing thousands, displacing more than a million people, and detaining pro-democracy advocates, political opposition leaders, members of civil society, and journalists all in a brutal attempt to consolidate its control.

Release: On behalf of the United States, I am honoured today to address the human dimensions of security in the context of conflict, particularly the consequences of Russia’s unrelenting, illegal war against Ukraine. Russia’s unconscionable violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty has wrought death and destruction, endangered the region and the larger international community, and shredded the key principles on which this body was founded.

Release: Secretary Blinken will lead the United States delegation to the 52nd Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly in Lima, Peru October 6-7. Delegates will convene under the theme “Together Against Inequality and Discrimination" for the first in-person General Assembly since 2019. Secretary Blinken will engage regional leaders on shared priorities, including combatting discrimination and intolerance, safeguarding democracy, and protecting human rights.

News Release: The United States hosted the 14th round of negotiations with the Government of Canada to modernize the Columbia River Treaty regime in Spokane, Washington October 4-5. As a result of our discussions, we have been able to find common ground on aspects of flood risk management, hydropower coordination, ecosystem cooperation, and increased Canadian operational flexibility.
