Device Speeds Sorting of Helpful Wasps

News Release: Beneficial wasps that kill crop pests like the Mediterranean fruit fly might soon be easier to raise indoors for this outdoor work. Scientists with USDA's Agricultural Research Service in Hilo, Hawaii, have shown that a device known as a pneumatic air separator should speed insectary mass-rearing of wasps. Because the medfly attacks more than 400 crops worldwide, it is considered one of the worst insect pests of agriculture.


News Release: Using technology developed by a private company, a USDA biochemist has developed a rapid, easy-to-use test that detects E. coli in food products. The test uses magnetic beads coated with anti-E. coli 0157 antibodies and ruthenium-labeled antibodies. Ruthenium is a metal that, through a chemical reaction, emits light that helps detect the presence of E. coli.
