Camping Fees Will Increase March 1

News Release: Effective March 1, 2007, camping fees at Joshua Tree National Park will increase. The per night camping fee will rise from $5 to $10 at Hidden Valley, Ryan, Jumbo Rocks, Belle, and White Tank campgrounds. Family campsites at Indian Cove, Black Rock, and Cottonwood campgrounds will increase from $10 to $15 per night.

Recovery Operations Completed after Fatality

News Release: Recovery operations that began on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10, 2007, came to a close on Sunday morning, February 11. Three rangers spent the night near the bottom of the canyon below Gunnison Point following a technically difficult day of climbing that included a 140 foot vertical ice climb in order to reach the body. Fading daylight halted operations Saturday night.


News Release: During opening procedures of the South Rim Visitor Center on the morning of Feb. 10, 2007 a ranger noticed a parked car, but no visitors in the vicinity. A search ensued that revealed an individual had fallen from Gunnison Point into the canyon sometime after 4:00 p.m on February 9, pending final determination from the Montrose County Coroner. The body is believed to be a 17 year old female from Montrose.
