New Consumer Protection Will Help Families Get More For Their Health Insurance Premiums

News Release: WASHINGTON - Ways and Means Committee Chairman Sander M. Levin (D-MI) and Subcommittee on Health Chairman Pete Stark (D-CA), today praised the implementation of the "medical loss ratio" consumer protection in the health reform law. This provision calls for health insurers to spend at least 80 cents of every premium dollar on medical care. Those insurers that spend less on medical care will be required to issue rebates to policyholders.
