There were 29 notices published by the Interior Department in week ending July 25, according to the Federal Register.

The most recent notice, Notice of Intent To Prepare an Environmental Assessment To Consider Opening Lands Subject to ANCSA 17(d)(1) Withdrawals to Selection Under the Alaska Native Vietnam-Era Veterans Land Allotment Program of 2019, was submitted on July 23, 2021.

The Interior Department published four the week before, marking a 625.0 percent increase.

The Department oversees more than 500 million acres of land. Downsizing the Federal Government, a project aimed at lowering taxes and boosting federal efficiency, said the department’s actions have contributed to a growing water crisis and holds many lands which could be better managed.

Notices are required documents detailing rules and regulations being proposed by each federal department. This allows the public to see what issues legislators and federal departments are focusing on.

Any person or organization can comment on the proposed rules. Departments and agencies must then address “significant issues raised in comments and discuss any changes made,” the Federal Register says.
