Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Message from the Secretary

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of Transportation on Jan. 12, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

On Monday, Jan. 15, our Nation celebrates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to being a Federal holiday, Monday has also been designated by Congress as a national day of volunteer service to honor Dr. King’s legacy. Dr. King said, “Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.”

The national day of volunteer service provides an opportunity to participate in America’s many volunteer projects. As former CEO and President of the United Way of America, I know the difference that volunteers can make in our communities and what a wonderful tribute it would be to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
