WASHINGTON – The U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao released the following statement regarding today’s incident on Southwest Airlines Flight 1380:

"The Department extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the airline passenger who was fatally injured today. The Department's priority is to work with the NTSB, which will lead the investigation, to determine the cause and the steps necessary to ensure the safety of the traveling public. I commend the pilots who safely landed the aircraft, and the crew and fellow passengers who provided support and care for the injured, preventing what could have been far worse."
