Environmental Justice at the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is seeking comments and suggestions on its updated environmental justice strategy to reduce the disproportionately high adverse human health and environmental effects of transportation programs, policies and activities on minority and low-income populations. A key component of the strategy is promoting greater community participation in decision-making processes. Under guidance from the Obama Administration, the Department signed an Interagency Memorandum of Understanding in August 2011, inviting agencies to adopt or update their environmental justice strategies. Collectively, the Department of Transportation and its agencies are in the process of updating guidance and strategy documents. From now until Dec. 31, 2011, the Department is inviting the public to provide insights, experiences and ideas for enhancing environmental justice in transportation related activities by signing on to www.ej.ideascale.com.
