CARES Act Air Service Exemptions for Spirit Airlines and United Airlines

Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation is acting on requests from Spirit Airlines and United Airlines for exemption from the CARES Act airline service obligations announced in Order 2020-4-2. Spirit Airlines requests that the Department grant it an exemption to temporarily suspend service from September 8 through September 30 from its service obligation at Latrobe, Pennsylvania, given the planned runway closure at the airport. The Department finds that granting Spirit Airlines’ request is warranted, and thus, the carrier is not obligated to provide service at Latrobe, Pennsylvania through Sept. 30, 2020. United Airlines requests that the Department grant it an extension from August 6 through September 30 from its service obligation at Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. The Department finds that granting United Airlines’ request is warranted and thus, United Airlines is not obligated to provide service at Aguadilla, Puerto Rico through Sept. 30, 2020.
