FEDERAL FARM COMMODITY PROGRAMS

Committee on Agriculture: Continued hearings to review the federal farm commodity programs with the barley growers. Testimony was heard from Daniel Wiltse, President, National Barley Growers Association.

AGRICULTURE, RURAL DEVELOPMENT, FDA AND RELATED AGENCIES APPROPRIATIONS

Committee on Appropriations: Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies held a hearing on the FDA. Testimony was heard from Bernard A. Schwetz, Acting Principal Deputy Commissioner, FDA, Department of Health and Human Services.

DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS

Committee on Appropriations: Subcommittee on Defense met in executive session to hold a hearing on U.S. Pacific Command and U.S. Forces, Korea. Testimony was heard from the following officials of the Department of Defense: Adm. Dennis C. Blair, USN, U.S. Pacific Command, and Gen. Tommy A. Swartz, USA, U.S. Forces, Korea.

The Subcommittee also met in executive session to hold a hearing on U.S. Central Command. Testimony was heard from Gen. Tommy R. Franks, USA, U.S. Central Command, Department of Defense.

INTERIOR APPROPRIATIONS

Committee on Appropriations: Subcommittee on Interior held a hearing on National Parks Services (Natural Resources Initiative). Testimony was heard from the following officials of the Department of the Interior: Denis P. Galvin, Deputy Director, National Park Service; Michael A. Soukup, Associate Director, Natural Resource Stewardship and Science; and Don L. Neubacher, Supt., Point Reyes National Seashore.

MILITARY CONSTRUCTION APPROPRIATIONS

Committee on Appropriations: Subcommittee on Military Construction held a hearing on Quality of Life in the Military. Testimony was heard from the following officials of the Department of Defense: Sgt. Maj. Jack L. Tilley, USA; Master Chief Petty Officer James L. Herdt, USN; Sgt. Maj. Alford L. McMichael, USMC; and Chief Master Sgt. Frederick J. Finch, USAF.

TRANSPORTATION APPROPRIATIONS

Committee on Appropriations: Subcommittee on Transportation held a hearing on Inspector General, Department of Transportation. Testimony was heard from Kenneth M. Mead, Inspector General, Department of Transportation.

MEMBERS DAY

Committee on the Budget: Held a hearing on Members Day. Testimony was heard from Representatives Gekas, Goodlatte, Allen, Underwood, Hoyer, Castle, Baird, Clement, Gonzalez, DeLauro, Pascrell, McGovern, Pelosi, Weldon of Pennsylvania and Meeks of New York.

PERSPECTIVES ON THE ECONOMIC OUTLOOK

Committee on the Budget: Held a hearing on Perspectives on the Economic Outlook. Testimony was heard from public witnesses.

RAISING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Committee on Education and the Workforce: Subcommittee on Education Reform held a hearing on ``Measuring Success: Using Assessments and Accountability to Raise Student Achievement.'' Testimony was heard from Reid Lyon, Chief, Child Development and Behavior Branch, NIH, Department of Health and Human Services; Mark Musick, Chairman, National Assessment Governing Board; and public witnesses.

EU DATA PROTECTION DIRECTION

Committee on Energy and Commerce: Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection held a hearing entitled: ``The EU Data Protection Directive: Implications for the U.S. Privacy Debate.'' Testimony was heard from public witnesses.

TECHNOLOGY AND EDUCATION

Committee on Energy and Commerce: Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet held a hearing entitled ``Technology and Education: A Review of Federal, State and Private Sector Programs.'' Testimony was heard from public witnesses.

BUDGET VIEWS AND ESTIMATES

Committee on Financial Services: Approved Committee Budget Views and Estimates for Fiscal Year 2002 for submission to the Committee on the Budget.

MISCELLANEOUS MEASURES; BUDGET VIEWS AND ESTIMATES

Committee on the Judiciary: Ordered reported the following bills: H.R. 809, Antitrust Technical Corrections Act of 2001; S. 320, as amended, Intellectual Property and High Technology Technical Amendments Act of 2001; H.R. 802, Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Act of 2001; H.R 741, to amend the Trademark Act of 1946 to provide for the registration and protection of trademarks used in commerce, in order to carry out provisions of certain international conventions; H.R. 860, Multidistrict, Multiforum Trial Jurisdiction Act of 2001; and H.R. 861, to make technical amendments to section 10 of title 9, United States Code.

The Committee approved, as amended, Budget Views and Estimates on the Fiscal Year 2002 Budget for submission to the Committee on the Budget.

CONSEQUENCES FOR JUVENILE OFFENDERS ACT

Committee on the Judiciary: Subcommittee on Crime held a hearing on H.R. 863, Consequences for Juvenile Offenders Act of 2001. Testimony was heard from Michael J. Anderegg, Presiding Judge, Family Division, Marquette County Circuit Court, Marquette, Michigan; James W. Payne, Judge, Juvenile Division, Marion Superior Court, Indianapolis Indiana; Steve Robinson, Executive Director, Youth Commission, State of Texas; and a public witness.

NATIONAL FIRE PLAN IMPLEMENTATION

Committee on Resources: Subcommittee on Forests and Forest Health held a hearing on the National Fire Plan Implementation. Testimony was heard from Lyle Laverty, National Fire Plan Coordinator, Forest Service, USDA; Tim Hartzell, Director, Office of Wildland and Fire Coordination, Department of the Interior; and Judy Martz, Governor, State of Montana.

MISCELLANEOUS MEASURES

Committee on Resources: Subcommittee on National Parks, Recreation and Public Lands held a hearing on the following bills: H.R. 107, to require that the Secretary of the Interior conduct a study to identify sites and resources, to recommend alternatives for commemorating and interpreting the Cold War; H.R. 400, to authorize the Secretary of the Interior to establish the Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home National Historic Site; and H.R. 452, Ronald Reagan Memorial Act of 2001. Testimony was heard from Delegate Norton; Richard G. Ring, Associate Director, Park Operations and Education, National Park Service, Department of the Interior; Jimmy Dishner, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Air Force (Installations), Department of Defense; Carolyn Brody, Member, Commission on Fine Arts; and public witnesses.

COAST GUARD SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING; COAST GUARD BRIEFING

Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure: Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation held a hearing on the Coast Guard Fiscal Year 2001 Supplemental Funding Needs. Testimony was heard from Adm. James M. Loy, USCG, Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Transportation.

Prior to this hearing, the Subcommittee received a briefing on the Coast Guard. The Subcommittee was briefed by Capt. Robert J. Papp, Jr., USCG, Chief, Office of Congressional Affairs, U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Transportation.

Joint Meetings

IMF/WORLD BANK REFORM

Joint Economic Committee: Committee concluded hearings to examine the status of proposed reforms relating to International Monetary Fund financial structure and transparency, IMF interest subsidies, moral hazard, and effectiveness of IMF operations, and World Bank financing and effectiveness, and IMF programs in Argentina, Turkey, and certain other countries, after receiving testimony from Allan Meltzer, Carnegie Mellon University/American Enterprise Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Charles Calomiris, Columbia University, New York, New York, and C. Fred Bergsten, Institute for International Economics, and Adam Lerrick, both of Washington, D.C., all on behalf of the International Financial Institution Advisory Commission

(IFIAC).

VETERANS PROGRAMS

Joint Hearing: Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs concluded joint hearings with the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs to review the legislative recommendations of certain veterans organizations, after receiving testimony from Robert L. Smith, III, Blinded Veterans Association, Frederick A. Taylor, Jr., Military Order of the Purple Heart, David W. Sommers, Non Commissioned Officers Association, Ronald Ziegler, Jewish War Veterans, and Joseph L. Fox, Sr., Paralyzed Veterans of America, all of Washington, D.C.
