Horseshoe Bend Overlook at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area near Lake Powell, Utah, will host a "Leave No Trace" Team in November after being selected as a "Hot Spot" earlier this month.
The overlook's selection as a hot spot by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics came after it was recognized as a diverse and popular national, state, and local park, according to an Oct. 13 U.S. National Park Service news release. The overlook was one of 10 locations identified as "in need" in the center's Leave No Trace Solutions for 2021.
"Horseshoe Bend Overlook at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is internationally known for its scenic view of the Colorado River," recreation area Superintendent William Shott said in the news release. "Our educational partnership with Leave No Trace aims to give our park staff and local community members additional skills to help park visitors leave this site and other public lands as good, or better, than they found them."
The Leave No Trace Team plans to work with Glen Canyon staff in November to provide local residents, area land managers, park partners and student volunteers with information, service work and education, all aimed at reducing outdoor impacts and increasing responsible recreation.
On Nov. 4, the Leave No Trace Team plans to provide a virtual event, "Effective Communication Authority of the Resource Training."
On Nov. 5, the team will join with Page High School students to remove graffiti at Horseshoe Bend Overlook. During that weekend's Page Balloon Regatta Street Fair, the Leave No Trace team plans to host an outreach table in front of the Glen Canyon Conservancy store at 12 N. Lake Powell Blvd. The event is open to the public.
An Action Planning workshop is set for Nov. 8 from 10 a.m., to noon. Glen Canyon staff and the Leave No Trace team are expected to host key stakeholders and then reconvene in a small-group session to discuss successes, challenges and opportunities. Those discussions are expected to produce a future-forward action plan to further implement Leave No Trace beyond the Horseshoe Bend Overlook Hot Spot week.
