WASHINGTON – Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today issued the following statement regarding the death of Larry Marek: "My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and co-workers of Larry Marek. After more than a week of valiant round-the-clock efforts to locate him, rescue workers made the tragic discovery on Sunday that he had not survived the April 15th roof fall at Lucky Friday Mine.

"Dozens of federal, state and company officials, miners, mine rescue teams and emergency personnel deserve our utmost gratitude for their efforts to find Larry and return him to his family. I can assure you that the Mine Safety and Health Administration, headed by Joseph Main, will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the roof collapse. Larry's family deserves to have answers, and we will continue our efforts to insist on safety and protection of all workers. No miner should ever have to die for a paycheck."
