SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending July 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 405,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 427,000. The 4-week moving average was 423,250, a decrease of 3,750 from the previous week's revised average of 427,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0 percent for the week ending July 2, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 3.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 2 was 3,727,000, an increase of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,712,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,719,250, a increase of 6,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,713,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 470,671 in the week ending July 9, an increase of 45,031 from the previous week. There were 515,991 initial claims in the comparable week in 2010.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending July 2, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,514,148, a decrease of 41,683 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.5 percent and the volume was 4,384,591.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending June 25 was 7,484,894, an increase of 25,333 from the previous week.
Extended benefits were available in Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia during the week ending June 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,035 in the week ending July 2, a decrease of 300 from the prior week. There were 2,700 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 66 from the preceding week.
There were 23,508 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 25, a decrease of 428 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 37,179, an increase of 563 from the prior week.
States reported 3,234,115 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending June 25, a decrease of 22,408 from the prior week. There were 3,907,004 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 25 were in Puerto Rico (5.2), Alaska (4.1), Pennsylvania (4.1), Oregon (3.9), California (3.8), Connecticut (3.6), Nevada (3.6), New Jersey (3.6), Arizona (3.4), Illinois (3.3), and Wisconsin (3.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 2 were in New York (+6,220), Minnesota (3,319), Kentucky (2,997), Massachusetts (+2,232), and California (+1,941) while the largest decreases were in Florida (-5,889), Maryland (-1,272), Oregon (-890),Wisconsin (-832) and Vermont (-596).
