Gutierrez Statement on Employment Report

WASHINGTON—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today released the following statement on the May Employment Report, which showed 75,000 jobs were created while the unemployment rate edged down to 4.6%: "Today's job report is a clear signal that America's economy continues to hit the sweet spot. The data confirm the President's pro-growth economic agenda is driving job creation and cutting our unemployment rate. More than 5.3 million jobs have been created since August 2003, and about 1.9 million of those jobs have been created over the past 12 months alone. Americans have more money to spend and invest as average hourly earnings are outpacing inflation.

"We will continue to advance the President's economic policies of keeping taxes low and spending down in order to create jobs and opportunities for U.S. families and businesses."
