U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker today released the following statement on the October jobs report, which showed that U.S. employment rose by 271,000 last month. Growth accelerated in most industries above their previous 12-month average, in particular professional and business services, retail trade, and construction.
“With employment growth picking up and the unemployment rate declining, more Americans are taking part in the economic expansion,” said Secretary Pritzker. “Private-sector employment has grown for 68 consecutive months, extending the longest streak on record, for a total of 13.5 million jobs. Furthermore, wages are now growing faster than at any point in this recovery.” “However, there is more we can do to ensure that our companies and workers compete on a level-playing field in the global economy. The recently released Trans-Pacific Partnership will open markets to ‘Made-in-America’ products and services, supporting higher-paying American jobs here at home.”
