U.S. Secretary of Commerce Announces Presidential Rank Award Given to Deputy Assistant Secretary Borman

Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced that Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce Matthew S. Borman, from the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) , has been named as a recipient of a Presidential Rank Award for his extraordinary accomplishments and commitment to excellence in public service.

“I am proud to announce that Deputy Assistant Secretary Borman is being recognized for his extraordinary leadership ability and policy acumen,” said Secretary Ross. “Matt represents the highest standards of public service.” Deputy Assistant Secretary Borman joined the Commerce Department in 1992 as an attorney in the Office of Chief Counsel for Export Administration. His current responsibilities include implementing controls on the export of dual-use and military items for national security, foreign policy, nonproliferation, and short supply reasons. He also oversees BIS's implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention as well as aspects of the agreement between the United States and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) related to the safeguard of nuclear weapons, and various BIS programs designed to ensure that industrial resources are available to meet national and economic security requirements.

Deputy Assistant Secretary Borman received his B.A. in History from Northwestern University‚ his M.A. from Northeastern University‚ and his J.D. from New York University School of Law.

About the Award The Presidential Rank Award is intended to recognize and celebrate the sustained extraordinary accomplishments of career public servants in the Senior Executive Service (SES), and the Senior Professionals (Senior - Level (SL) / Scientific-Professional levels. The award is approved by the President.
