FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2003 WWW.USDOJ.GOV TAX (202) 514-2008 TDD (202) 514-1888 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Department of Justice today announced that it has filed a lawsuit against Celebration, Florida resident Linda Borden seeking to stop the alleged promotion of an illegal tax scheme that has been promoted in 22 states and has defrauded the federal government of more than $15 million.
The civil injunction complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, alleges that Borden helps her customers claim income-tax deductions for bogus home-based business expenses. The suit also names as defendants several of Bordens businesses - New Innovations of Central Florida; Nex, Inc.; Nexclick LLC and B & B Consulting Services. In addition to seeking to bar Borden from allegedly promoting the tax scheme, the government complaint also asks the court to bar her from preparing federal income tax returns.
The Justice Department and the Internal Revenue Service are working together to shut down hucksters who promote bogus tax schemes, said Eileen J. OConnor, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Departments Tax Division. Those who promote or participate in fraudulent schemes can expect to face substantial penalties and, where appropriate, criminal prosecution. The Internal Revenue Service has issued public warnings about home-based business tax evasion schemes and can be found at: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=107493,00.html http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-news/ir-02-13.pdf More information about the Justice Departments efforts against tax-scam promoters can be found at http://www.usdoj.gov/tax/taxpress2003.htm 03-649
