New guidance to mitigate security risks with the advancement of quantum computing have been released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to help organizations protect their data systems.
“Quantum computing will be a scientific breakthrough, but now is the time for organizations to assess and mitigate their risk exposure to protect infrastructure and increase cybersecurity around the country as "It is also expected to pose new data privacy and cybersecurity risks.” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a recent release.
Quantum computing is expected to break encryption methods that are currently widely used to protect business data and secure communication. The new guidance by the DHS helps institutions in the transition to postquantum cryptography by identifying, prioritizing and protecting potentially vulnerable data and systems.
A report by ZDNet stated quantum computing is expected to resolve complex problems in a matter of minutes that would otherwise take years or centuries in a classical system.
The new technology poses huge ramifications in the way the world works, assisting in the discovery of new drugs, creating better batteries, predicting the weather, picking stocks, processing language, protecting data and more.
