The USDA is now accepting applications for a new farm and food workers relief grant program.

On Nov. 10, the USDA began accepting applications for the new Farm and Food Workers Relief (FFWR) grant program that was first revealed on Sept. 7. The range of the grants is $5 million to $50 million. Technical assistance will be provided by AMS to aid applicants to the program.

The initiative will fund $665 in grants to help relieve the costs of health and safety during the pandemic. At least one pilot initiative will receive $20 million to support grocery workers due to their essential roles in our society. According to a press release, the new program is financed by the Consolidated Appropriations Act as a part of USDA’s Build Back Better program.

The goal of the program is to deal with new costs directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as dependent care and paying for testing and quarantines, according to a press release. Feb. 8 is the deadline to apply. The program is open to state agencies, non profit organizations, tribal entities and meatpacking workers.

In order to get the funding, eligible entities have to show that they are able to reimburse farm and meatpacking workers for up to $600 in expenses pertaining to the coronavirus pandemic, as reported in a press release. Financial controls will also be a factor in if they receive funding. Applications should also explain how they will collaborate with smaller organizations.
