For Immediate Release DHS Press Office Contact: 202-282-8010 WASHINGTON — Last night, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, joined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Acting Deputy Commissioner Kevin McAleenan, traveled to Louisville, Ky., where they viewed nightshift operations at the UPS Worldport Facility and highlighted the Department of Homeland Security’s ongoing partnership with the private sector to ensure the safety and security of the global supply chain.
At the UPS Worldport Facility, Secretary Johnson met with UPS Chief Operating Officer and incoming Chief Executive Officer David Abney to thank UPS for the continued partnership with the Department to efficiently safeguard commerce. UPS Worldport is part of the UPS-Louisville facility, the company’s largest hub in the U.S. with the third highest package volume in the country. During their visit, Secretary Johnson and Deputy Commissioner McAleenan also met with CBP officials to discuss the measures in place to screen packages arriving at the facility.
Secretary Johnson reiterated the Department’s commitment to working with the private sector to improve inspection operations through programs such as the Air Cargo Advance Screening pilot program, which collects pre-loading data on air cargo shipments expected to route to the U.S. To date, CBP has assessed more than 160 million shipments from 193 countries through the Air Cargo Advance Screening Pilot.
Last February, President Obama issued an executive order to streamline the export/import process for America’s businesses, which will make it easier for business to submit information required by the federal government for the import and export of cargo, and enhance economic competitiveness. Secretary Johnson’s visit underscored the Department’s ongoing commitment to this important goal.
