The following media advisory was published by the Department of Interior on Sept. 1, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, presented a lecture to U.S. Department of the Interior employees and conservation partners titled “Conservation and Communities: The Shifting Paradigm of International Conservation.” Her remarks focused on the growing need for global approaches to conservation and the critical role of local populations and especially youth. Dr. Goodall also spoke about her new book, Hope for Animals and Their World: How Endangered Species Are Being Rescued from the Brink. For the first time, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar presented the Secretary's Lifetime Achievement Award, having chosen Dr. Goodall in recognition of her tireless dedication to promoting great ape conservation through applied research, public education, and advocacy-research that transformed scientific perceptions of the relationship between humans and animals, and improved the livelihoods of local communities, and created a worldwide network of young people dedicated to taking action to care for the environment.
