Secretary Jewell to Kick Off National Park Service Centennial Week in New York - Archive

The following media advisory was published by the Department of Interior on Aug. 19, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

NEW YORK – On Monday, Aug. 22, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will begin a nationwide tour of National Park Service (NPS) sites to commemorate the agency’s Centennial year.

Secretary Jewell, U.S. Congresswoman Nita Lowey and New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Rose Harvey will tour the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area and participate in a sign unveiling ceremony at Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park for the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail, where the allied armies of General Rochambeau’s French Army and General Washington’s Continental Army constituted the largest troop movement of the American Revolution. Secretary Jewell will also participate in a roundtable discussion with stakeholders on the key role NPS plays in preserving America’s historic and cultural heritage.

Secretary Jewell in the afternoon will ring The Closing Bell® at the New York Stock Exchange to highlight the economic contributions of the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. Secretary Jewell recently released the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Economic Report for Fiscal Year 2015, which found that Interior investments in recreation, conservation, water and renewable energy led to $106 billion in economic output, and supported 862,000 jobs.

Secretary Jewell in the evening will join Bill Nye and President and CEO of the National Park Foundation Will Shafroth at Brooklyn Bridge Park for an interactive event to inspire new generations to discover our treasured national parks and get involved in science, technology, engineering and math. Through a partnership with One World Trade Center and Brooklyn Bridge Park, participants will control the color of the One World Trade Center spire for the first time ever by solving interactive, collaborative puzzles on a giant digital circuit board. The event, featuring a DJ set by Questlove, brings the innovative spirit of Thomas Edison National Historical Park to New York. For those who want to follow the excitement remotely, the Statue of Liberty’s webcam of New York Harbor will offer views of the city.
