WASHINGTON - On Thursday, Feb. 25, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will travel to Mexico to discuss strategic economic and commercial priorities between the United States and Mexico as part of the U.S.-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue (HLED). Jewell will join the U.S. delegation for the HLED meeting, led by Vice President Joe Biden.
The HLED forum was created by the Obama Administration in 2013 to elevate and strengthen bilateral relationships between the two countries to advance mutual economic growth, job creation, and competitiveness.
On the U.S. side, HLED is co-chaired by the departments of State, Commerce and U.S. Trade Representative, with additional participation from Interior, Agriculture, Energy, Homeland Security, Labor, Transportation, Treasury, and USAID. The HLED work plan includes promoting competitiveness and connectivity; fostering economic growth; energy cooperation; productivity, entrepreneurship and innovation; and partnering for regional and global leadership. The HLED also fosters greater alignment and cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico on regional and global issues, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the G20.
While in Mexico, Secretary Jewell will also sign cooperative agreements with both Mexico’s Minister of Energy Pedro Joaquín Coldwell and Mexico's Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Rafael Pacchiano on energy development, conservation, and continued adaptation for the impacts of climate change on our shared natural resources.
