The U.S. Census Bureau today released the 2021 CPS ASEC Geographic Mobility detailed table package and updates to historical tables and graphs. Geographic mobility and migration refer to the movement of people from one location of residence to another. These national- and regional-level estimates are from the 2021 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC).
In 2021, 27.1 million Americans reported living at a different residence than a year earlier, compared to 29.8 million people in 2020. This represents an 8.4% mover rate, the lowest documented rate in over 70 years.
The 2020 to 2021 1-year migration tables provide estimates of geographic mobility, including detailed information about types of moves in the past year, characteristics of people who moved and main reason for relocating. Some statistics in the migration historical tables and historical graphs date back to 1948.
The Census Bureau collects, produces and publishes a range of statistics on geographic mobility and migration using multiple data sources. More information about these data sources and the types of estimates they produce is available at the Migration/Geographic Mobility web page. The most recent CPS ASEC data were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic, and pandemic-related survey operations and nonresponse changes may have influenced the estimates in 2021.
